In Loving Memory of The legendary Ernie Smith
Ernie Smith, born Glenroy Anthony Smith, was born on May 1, 1945, in Kingston, Jamaica, and passed away on April 16, 2026, in Miami, Florida, at the age of 80. A beloved singer-songwriter, guitarist, and Jamaican cultural icon, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy of timeless music, resilience, and inspiration that touched generations around the world.
Raised in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica, Ernie developed a love for music at an early age. His father, a guitarist, recognized his gift and placed a guitar in his hands when he was just twelve years old. That early encouragement helped shape one of Jamaica’s most respected and recognizable musical careers.
Ernie rose to prominence with a string of unforgettable classics including “Bend Down,” “Ride On Sammy,” “One Dream,” “Pitta Patta,” “Duppy Gunman,” and “Life Is Just For Living,” which won the Yamaha Music Festival in Japan. His smooth voice, lyrical storytelling, and unmistakable Jamaican spirit made him one of the most cherished voices in Caribbean music history.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts, the Government of Jamaica awarded him the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service in the Field of Music in 1973. Throughout his life, Ernie continued to record, perform, and inspire others, remaining a symbol of authenticity, creativity, and perseverance.
Even in his later years, Ernie’s love for music never faded. His final album, Another Side of Ernie Smith, was released in 2025 and produced by David M. Turano. His final single, “Pitta Patta,” a collaboration with Ed Robinson, was also released in 2025 and achieved chart success in South Florida and Europe, further proving that his music continued to resonate across generations.
Above all, Ernie was a devoted family man who treasured those closest to him. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Claudette Bailey-Smith; his loving children, in order, Taasha, Peter, Seychelle, Ojay, and Sahara; his treasured grandchildren Shelton, Kalilah, Prince, and Daniel; his cherished siblings Yvonne, Paul, Kaye, Normadel, Peter, and Patrick; the mothers of his children, Burdette Smith and Hortense Lewis; his dear in-laws Beverly, Joan, Arlene, Keith, Roy, Kim; exceptional nieces and nephews; his late wife Janet, who also served as his longtime manager; and his current manager, Joanna Marie Robinson.
Ernie Smith lived a life rooted in faith, music, family, and enduring purpose. His songs captured the spirit of Jamaica, and his legacy will continue through every melody, every memory, and every life he touched.
Rest in Power, Ernie Smith. Forever in our hearts.
